Nashville Public Library’s resident puppet theater company will showcase its stunning adaptation of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” complete with dramatic sets, an original score and handmade puppets and costumes. Wishing Chair Productions generally stages four or five different shows each year that run for two to three months each. The company grew out of the long and storied marionet te tradition at the Main Library, which began in 1938 with Tom Tichenor’s first puppet show. Tichenor went on to stage nationally acclaimed shows at the Main Library for the next 50 years. Today, the library owns nearly 350 marionettes, including close to 250 of Tichenor’s unique creations.
